How to get insurance in Greece: the short answer

Short answer

Getting insurance in Greece with Leadinsure takes three steps: you tell us what you need, we ask the insurers we work with for proposals and explain them side by side, and you choose. You do not need to send documents for a quote, and there is no obligation.

  • For a quote. A few details about what you want to insure, such as the car, the home or the ages of the people to cover.
  • To issue the policy. The documents depend on the insurance company; we tell you in advance.
  • Greek tax number (AFM). Whether you need one depends on the insurer. Foreigners can apply for one online.
  • How we are paid. You pay us no separate fee: our commission is already included in the premium.
  • Reply time. Within 24 hours on working days.
  • After you buy. We help with renewals, changes and claims.

The process

Three steps,
no obligation.

Your request

Tell us what you need.

Use the quote form or email us, and describe your situation in your own words. You do not need to send any documents at this stage.

Proposals

We explain the options side by side.

We ask the insurers we work with for proposals and explain them side by side: what each one covers, its main exclusions and its price. If a detail is missing, we ask you for it first, so that the proposals fit your situation.

Cover and support

You decide, and we stay in touch.

Once you choose, we arrange the policy with the insurance company. We remain your contact for renewals, changes and claims.

Details and documents

What we will ask you, by type of cover

For a quote we need a few details, not documents. The quote form asks for them step by step, or you can write them in an email.

CoverWhat we ask for a quote
Car or motorbikeThe details of the registration certificate (άδεια κυκλοφορίας) and of your driving licence: make and model, engine size and year of first registration, the main driver’s age, how the vehicle is used, and whether it has Greek or foreign plates.
HomeThe town or area, the size in m², the year it was built (roughly is fine), the type of building, and how you use it: main home, holiday home or let.
Short-term rentalThe town or area, the number of properties, whether there is a pool, and the liability limit you want. If you are not sure about the limit, we explain the options.
HealthThe age of each person to insure.
Health for a residence permitThe type of residence permit, the date of birth of each person, nationality and the date the cover must start.
BoatThe type of boat, its length, year built, engine power and flag, the value to insure and the home port or marina.
BusinessWhat the business does, where it operates, the number of employees and the covers you are interested in.

Documents to issue the policy

The documents needed to issue the policy, such as a passport, a residence permit or a Greek tax number (AFM), depend on the insurance company and on your situation. We tell you in advance exactly what applies to you, before you decide.

Do you need a Greek tax number (AFM)?

Whether an insurer can issue a policy without an AFM depends on the insurer. If you do not have one yet, tell us and we check before we ask for proposals.

  • Who can get one. The tax authority (AADE) issues an AFM to any individual, Greek or foreign, whether tax resident in Greece or abroad.
  • How. You apply online through myAADE and confirm your identity by video call (myAADElive) or by appointment at a tax office (ΔΟΥ). AADE does not charge for this. Once the application is approved, you receive the AFM together with access codes for AADE’s online services.
  • Buying a used car? The transfer can be done online on gov.gr: the seller enters the buyer’s AFM and surname, and the buyer accepts by logging in with their own TAXISnet codes. Within 30 days, the buyer, or someone they authorise, then takes the registration certificate signed by both parties and proof of payment of the fees to the transport department, to get the new certificate. Both parties must be registered in the National Registry of Communication (ΕΜΕπ) to use the online service. The transfer can also be done in person, at a KEP (citizen service centre) or the regional transport department. The online route needs an AFM and TAXISnet codes, so arrange them before you buy. Our car insurance guide explains how to insure the car from the first day.

How we are paid

You pay us no separate fee: our commission is already included in the premium.

Leadinsure is a registered insurance agent. Under Greek law (ν. 4583/2018, art. 4), an agent distributes insurance products in the name and on behalf of one or more insurance companies. In practice, we ask the insurers we work with for proposals and explain them side by side, and you decide which one, if any, suits you.

Asking for a quote does not commit you to anything. You can check our registration in the public register of insurance intermediaries (Ε.ΣΗ.Π.): enter our G.E.MI. number, 178123458000, in the General Registry Number field. Our About page shows the steps and has more about Leadinsure.

Renewals, changes, claims

After you buy

We remain your contact for as long as the policy runs, by phone and email.

Renewals

Before your policy renews, we remind you and go through the renewal terms with you. If your needs have changed, we can ask the insurers we work with for new proposals.

Changes during the policy

Tell us when something changes, for example who drives the car or how you use your home. Greek law requires the policyholder to tell the insurer about any fact that may significantly increase the risk (ν. 2496/1997, art. 4), so an undeclared change can affect what the insurer pays after a claim.

Claims

If something happens, call or email us and tell the insurance company as soon as possible. We tell you what the insurer needs and follow the claim with you.

  • Car accident. Report it to your insurer immediately, and at the latest within 8 working days of learning of it (π.δ. 237/1986, art. 9). For a culpable delay, a court can order you to compensate the insurer up to €2,000.
  • Home insurance and other damage insurance. The policyholder must notify the insurer within 8 days of learning of the loss (ν. 2496/1997, art. 7).
  • Accident with another car. The friendly settlement system applies only when both insurers involved have joined it. The accident statement form (Φιλική Δήλωση Τροχαίου Ατυχήματος) is no longer required for it, but it makes the process easier and faster. Our accident statement guide explains how to fill it in.

For what to do at the scene, see Car accident in Greece: what to do.

Do not wait

Report a loss the same or the next day. Policies can also set their own procedure for claims, so check your policy terms or ask us.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay you a fee?

You pay us no separate fee: our commission is already included in the premium. Asking for a quote does not commit you to anything.

How fast will you reply?

We reply within 24 hours on working days. If a detail we need is missing, such as a date of birth, we ask for it first, so that the proposals we send fit your situation.

Can everything be done remotely?

Yes. There is no need to visit our office: we work by phone, email and online, and we send you the proposals and the policy documents by email.

Do I have to live in Greece to ask for a quote?

No. You can ask for a quote if you live in Greece, are moving here or own property here. Whether a policy can be issued depends on what you insure and on the insurer's requirements, and we tell you before you decide.

Do I need a Greek tax number (AFM)?

It depends on the insurance company and on what you insure, so tell us if you do not have one yet. Any individual, Greek or foreign, can apply for an AFM online through myAADE, the tax authority's portal, and confirm their identity by video call or at a tax office. If you buy a used car, the transfer can be done online on gov.gr, which needs an AFM and TAXISnet codes, or in person at a KEP or the regional transport department.

What happens if I have a claim?

Call or email us and tell the insurance company as soon as possible. For a car accident, the law asks you to report it to your insurer immediately and at the latest within 8 working days. For home insurance and other damage insurance, the deadline is 8 days from learning of the loss. We tell you what the insurer needs and follow the claim with you.

Can you check a policy I already have?

Yes. Send us the policy and its terms, and we explain what it covers, its main exclusions and when it renews. If you want to see alternatives, we ask the insurers we work with for proposals and explain them side by side.
